How to choose and position a mural art?

Updated: Aug 15, 2023

01 Emotions

First of all, we choose a canvas because it seduces us and makes us vibrate, then we can offer it a frame that suits it or even no frame at all, in the case of a canvas, for example. No matter the price or the originality, the works must please you. The emotions conveyed by the work will radiate into your space. It is important that this emotion affects you positively or at least that you recognize yourself in it.

For example, a painting with a calm emotion for the bedrooms, bathroom and living room and something more lively for the dining room and the office. The cornerstone is therefore, the emotion you want to feel in this space.

As humans, we are emotionally evolving over the years. It is therefore very possible that a canvas chosen 10 years ago, no longer be like that much today.

02 Placement

Evaluate your space and the size of the ideal frame for the work, which will only be determined later. Do you have a very large wall? You can install a very large canvas or a composition of several smaller ones. In any case, it will be necessary to think of leaving space in front in order to be able to move forward and be able to admire them more closely.

As a general rule, the centre point of the canvases is placed at eyes level, so about 60 inches from the ground. However, this rule may change from case to case. For example, above a fireplace or a bedside bed table.

We will place the portrait photographs elsewhere than in the main rooms in order to create a more welcoming atmosphere for our guests, in the library or the stairwell, for example. Boudoir-type paintings are reserved for the owner's bedroom, so as not to create discomfort.

03 The Choice

What to choose? Remember the questions to ask yourself are; what emotion does this work inspire in me? And what emotion do I want to feel? You could go to a department store and buy a mass-produced canvas and there would be nothing wrong with that, but you wouldn't have anything unique either.

My advice is this; subscribe to your local artists via social networks, visit the summer markets in your area or during your vacation getaways. By looking for it, you will fall in love. Do not rush.

The choice is as unlimited as there are artists, wall macrame, painting, art photography, portraits, drawing, go explore.

Remember that the works of art, art photographs or selected canvases reflect your personality and allow your guests to enjoy your warm interior.
