photography for beginners

Photography is an exciting art that captures moments, landscapes and emotions visually. I meet a lot of people who are interested in it but very few persist, why?

If you're new to photography, here are some tips to get you started on the right foot;

01 Determine what you want to work with

Whether it's an SLR camera, mirrorless camera or even a smartphone. It all depends on you, your budget and what you want to use it for. Keep in mind that each camera has its limitations in terms of speed, pixel, focus, shutter etc. Although it seems futile at first.

It is rather frustrating to discover later why we cannot create a nice blur in the background for example.

02 Understand your camera

It is essential to understand your device in order to maximize its performance. Raise your hand, if you have a quality camera but take pictures exclusively in automatic mode (A).

Understanding the basic functionality of your device is key. I recommend the basic course offered by the Studio de formation en photographie de Québec. The 3 hour online course will allow you to be able to use all the modes offered by your camera, in addition to familiarizing yourself with terms such as exposure, aperture, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, focus , depth of field, white balance, etc. These concepts will help you control how your photos look.

03 Practice regularly

Take your camera everywhere with you and take as many pictures as possible. Constant practice will help you improve your technical skills and your eye for the composition and use of light.

For my part, I joined my local photography club, criticism of contests helps me a lot to improve myself. It also allows me to be inspired by what other people are doing, their travels, their emotions etc. Continuous learning is essential in the field of photography.

04 Edit and print

It makes all the difference. First, editing and printing allows you to study your shots in detail on a larger format. You will become more critical of your own work. At a minimum, learn how to use editing software such as Adobe Lightroom or editing apps to adjust brightness, contrast, and color balance. Although for most photographs the retouching is minimal, the effect is instantaneous.

In conclusion

To continue in photography, you have to know from the start that good equipment is expensive. It is not enough to push a button to obtain a photo with the WoW effect. That the time spent behind a computer doing post-processing is much greater than the time when the photo is taken. That continuous learning is essential and comes through practice.
